Domain choosing tips by using Keywords, hyphen, plurals.

4. Use of Keyword in a Domain Name.

  • A keyword is nothing but a search term or query we generally type in search engines and search engines delivers the results accordingly. Every webmaster wants his website should index at relatively higher ranking in the search results for a specific keyword closely related with his site or business.
  • Let us say, your main nature of site or business is Electronics Supplier. In this case ‘Electronics Supplier’ combine can be a keyword or ‘Electronics’ as a keyword. You want your website should index at higher position in search results for the above keywords. As being Electronics Supplier, you could able to provide electronics goods at wholesale rates to the customer.
  • Now we will find a perfect highly targeted keyword using WordTracker’s online free keyword research tool. Please visit Wordtracker. This tool generates up to 100 related keywords and an estimate of their daily search volume.
  •  First we will type 'Electronics Supplier' and hit enter. Results are showing search volume only ‘17’ per day for the keyword ‘Electronics Supplier’. Now we will try ‘Electronics’ a broad search query associated with endless electronics goods and services. Results are showing a huge search volume ‘1979’ per day for the keyword ‘Electronics’. Our job is not finished yet. We cannot use the keyword ‘Electronics’ alone in our domain name because ‘Electronics’ is associated with endless electronics goods and services. This keyword is so popular it is really tough to find a domain name with this keyword alone. The nature of your site or business is ‘Electronics Supplier’, so scroll down the entire keyword list and finds a perfect match highly targeted keyword.
  • You will notice a most relevant keyword ‘Wholesale Electronics’ on the 12th position from the top having reasonably higher search volume ‘415’ per day.  Now your job is to find a domain name for a keyword ‘Wholesale Electronics’. If this keyword is your domain name like wholesaleelectronics.com or wholesale-electronics.com, then there are maximum chances to get your website higher ranking.
  • In such type of situations no top level domains are available like .com, .net, .org etc. then try for country-specific top level or second level extensions like .in, .uk, .co.in, .co.uk etc. Use plurals only if no other option is left.
*Tip: Search volumes indicated above for illustration purpose can change day by day.

5. Use of Hyphen in a Domain Name.

  • A Hyphen ie a single special character is allowed that is. For e.g. India-tourism.com. A Hyphen is used as a separator between two keywords. Here in the given example it represents that the company has Tourism business based in India. Hyphen is not allowed in the beginning or ending part of the domain name. More than one Hyphen can also be used. For e.g.India-tourism-online.com.
  • You can also use numbers ranging from 0 to 9 in any part of a domain name, i.e. beginning, somewhere in the middle or at the end. For e.g.1we1.com.
  • There are some pros and cons in this matter.
  • Pros: 1) Its easier for search engines to distinguish the keywords better thus resulting in higher rankings and more searches.
  • 2)  It provides an option in case of unavailability of that particular domain name.
  • Cons:  1) The hyphen may be forgotten or omitted thus missing a hit or resulting in Hay way searches.
Thus it is up to the user to decide the use of hyphen.

6. Use of plurals.

  • Sometimes, you are unable to get your desired domain name, even Hyphen also exists. Then you can use ‘And’, ‘The’, ‘s or es’ to refine your search for getting as much close to your desired domain name.
